Before you begin taking oxycodone/acetaminophen, and each time you receive a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. Consult your physician or pharmacist if you have any questions.

As directed by your doctor, take this medication by mouth. This medication may be taken with or without food. If you experience nausea, it may be beneficial to take this medication with food. Consult your physician or pharmacist for additional ways to alleviate nausea (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).

Consume no grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist indicates that it is safe to do so. Grapefruit may increase your risk of experiencing side effects from this medication. Consult your physician or pharmacist for additional information.

If you are using a liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the prescribed dose using a medication measuring device. Use a syringe instead of a household spoon to ensure you get the correct dose.

Dosage is determined by your medical history and response to treatment. Do not increase the dose, take it more frequently, or for a longer period of time than prescribed. When instructed, discontinue the medication properly.

Pain medications are most effective when used immediately upon the onset of pain. If you wait until the pain becomes unbearable, the medication may not be as effective.

If you have persistent pain (for example, as a result of cancer), your doctor may also prescribe long-acting opioid medications. In that case, this medication may be used on an as-needed basis for severe (breakthrough) pain. Stopping this medication abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms, especially if you have been taking it for a long period of time or in high doses. To avoid withdrawal, your doctor may gradually decrease your dose. Notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you experience withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, mental/mood changes (including anxiety, difficulty sleeping, suicidal thoughts), watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or abrupt behavioral changes.

It is possible to experience nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, or drowsiness. Some of these side effects may subside after a period of time on this medication. Notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.

Consume dietary fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise to avoid constipation. Additionally, you may require a laxative. Consult your pharmacist to determine the best laxative for you.

To avoid dizziness and lightheadedness, slowly rise from a seated or lying position.

Bear in mind that your doctor prescribed this medication because the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. Many people who take this medication do not experience significant side effects.

Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including: sleep apnea, mental/mood changes, severe stomach/abdominal pain, difficulty urinating, or signs that your adrenal glands are not functioning properly (such as loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, weight loss).

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following extremely serious side effects: fainting, seizure, slow/shallow breathing, severe drowsiness/difficulty waking up.

A severe allergic reaction to this medication is uncommon. However, seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of the following symptoms of a severe allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

If someone has overdosed and is experiencing serious symptoms such as passing out or difficulty breathing, administer naloxone immediately if it is available, and then call 911. If the individual is awake and exhibiting no symptoms, contact a poison control center immediately. Residents of the United States of America can contact their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Residents of Canada may contact a provincial poison control center. Overdose symptoms may include: shallow/slow breathing, slow heartbeat, coma, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sweating, stomach/abdominal pain, extreme exhaustion, yellowing of the eyes/skin, and dark urine.

This medication was prescribed specifically for your current condition. Do not use it for another condition unless directed to do so by your doctor. In that case, a different medication may be required.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist to determine whether you should keep naloxone on hand to treat opioid overdose. Teach your family or household members the symptoms and treatment of an opioid overdose.
Dose Omitted

If you are on a regular dose schedule and forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If the next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose. Take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not double the dose to make up for missed doses.
